Goodman Company Expands Recall of AC and Heating Units
This morning Goodman announced a recall of about 5.300 units of Goodman and York Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pumps (PTAC) and Room Air Conditioners (RAC). Users were noting that the air conditioning and heating units can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards.

DOE Issues Final Ruling on Test Procedures
ASHRAE reports that this December, the DOE issued a final rule on test procedures of small, large, and very large air-cooled commercial package air-conditioning and heating equipment. The rule references and discusses the following ASHRAE standards: ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 37-2009 Methods of Testing for Rating Electrically Driven Unitary Air-Conditioning and Heat Pump Equipment, ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, and ANSI/ASHRAE 127-2007 Method of Testing for Rating Computer and Data Processing Room Unitary Air Conditioners.

AHRI’s Rees Scholarship Foundation Awards HVACR Students and Veterans
This January, the Clifford H. “Ted” Rees, Jr., Scholarship Foundation announced that it would send out $60,500 in scholarships to HVACR industry veterans and students all over the country. Since the Rees Scholarship Foundation was founded in 2003, it has awarded almost $440,000 in scholarships to more than 250 deserving students and instructors. NATE Launches Exams to Meet Workforce Shortage
NATE will be offering two new levels of HVAC testing and training in order to help contractors recruit and find new talent. The Ready-to-Work Certificate is an entry-level exam designed for technicians who are just entering the HVAC field with little to no formal education or training.

AHRI Submits Comment on FTC Labeling NOPR
On Jan. 11, AHRI submitted comments on a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR), which was published on Nov. 2, 2015. The NOPR included modified central air conditioner (CAC) and residential water heater EnergyGuide labels, and a requirement to report links to EnergyGuide labels for all products through the DOE’s Compliance and Certification Management System.

DOE to Begin Investigating Manufacturers Who Produce Unmatched Units
Last month, the Department of Energy announced that it will seek civil penalties from manufacturers that produced unmatched central air-conditioning and heat pumps on or after Feb. 1, 2016. This action will eliminate the manufacturer’s ability to produce dry-charge R-22 heat pumps or air-conditioners unless a waiver is granted by the DOE. So far, not a single manufacturer has requested to do so, notes the DOE in a statement.

PHCC Announces 2015 Scholarship Winners
Last month, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Education Foundation announced the winners of its 2015 scholarship. Twenty students were awarded a total of $37,500 in scholarships funded by the Foundation, the South jersey Mechanical Contractors Association, Anne Williams, the PHCC Auxiliary of Texas, the PHCC Auxiliary of Massachusetts and PHCC’s Past National Officers.
