EC Indoor Blower Motors, Resistance is Futile
Thirty-two years after ECM technology was introduced to the residential and light commercial HVAC industry, the indoor blower motor segment of this industry is now almost completely converted from PSC to ECM. Interestingly enough the first application for ECM in the HVAC industry was also the indoor blower motor. The constant airflow “variable speed” indoor blower motor was introduced by GE in 1987.

I strongly encourage an open mind when encountering a new approach that’s not in your comfort zone. If all human beings chose the closed-minded approach, the world would not advance. One of my old instructors used to say, “read three books and ask three people before forming your own opinion.” What he was trying to reinforce is that we must get information from multiple sources. Over the last several years, the number of refrigerant choices has increased dramatically. The days of having a few refrigerants to serve all applications are long gone. The increase in refrigerant options is largely driven by the need for solutions with lower global warming potentials (GWPs).
