Pitzer Goes Green with Sustainability on Campus

In 2001 Pitzer College in Claremont, CA committed itself to expanding its campus with a focus on sustainability.  Under the new two phase plan, the construction would house more than 300 students in four buildings.

Phase II of Pitzer College’s Residential Life Project, which opened in August 2012 used a variety of methods to remain eco-friendly and keep the carbon footprint of the campus down. The mixed-use residence halls were designed following best building practices and with more than 40 sustainable features to meet the criteria for LEED Platinum certification.

In order to do this the college is installing more than photovoltaic roof panels to lower CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 lbs and generate 118,000 Kw hours of renewable energy annually, supply 10% of the building’s energy demand each year. Pitzer also purchases power credits to support the development of green power.

Each building is heated and cooled with high-efficiency chillers, boilers and pumps that keep energy consumption about 30% lower than LEED baseline standards. This translates into a cost savings of approximately $35,000 a year.
